Tourist Visa

What supporting documents will I need?

You’ll need specific documents to support your visa application. By visiting Visa for Italy and entering information about you and your trip, you can get guidance on what will be needed. You’ll usually need the documents and proof shown below.

Supporting documents
  • Your completed and signed visa application form (a digital signature won’t be accepted). The application form can differ depending on your country of origin. You can download the form from the official website of the relevant Italian Consulate or Embassy where you plan to apply.
  • Your original passport and a copy. Your passport needs to be valid for 3 months after your stay in Italy and it needs at least 2 blank pages for your visa.
  • 2 passport-size pictures that meet the Schengen photo requirements, meaning:
    • they’re no older than 6 months, coloured and clear
    • your face takes up 80% of the picture
  • A copy of your civil status documents.
Evidence

As well as these documents, you’ll also need to show proof that you have:

  • Enough money to cover your stay in Italy and the entire Schengen Area.
  • Your outbound and return travel plans are arranged. This could be a copy of your flight itinerary or booked flight tickets. Your proof of travel will need to show flight dates, travel number, and any other relevant details.
  • Somewhere to stay in Italy. Depending on your accommodation, this could be a hotel reservation, rental agreement, or an invitation letter if you’ll be staying with friends or family.
  • Private health insurance, that covers you for your entire stay in Italy and the Italian territory.
Additional documents

The visa office might ask for additional documents, but you’ll be able to get specific information at the visa office for your area.

Sometimes the authorities may ask for copies of relevant pages of your passport, such as ones containing previous visas. Or, you could be asked for a cover letter explaining why you’re applying to visit Italy, how long you’ll be staying, and any other relevant details.
