How do I apply for a visa?

Top Tip: You don’t have to complete your application in one go. You can start it, save it, and come back to it later if you wish. This way you can make sure you’ve filled out all the sections correctly.

How do I apply for a Child Student visa?

You can start the application here. You’ll be asked to confirm your identity, but the way you do this will depend on where you’re from and what type of passport you have. You’ll be told what you need to do when you apply, which could be either:

  • having your fingerprints and photo taken at a visa application centre (you can find your nearest one here)
  • using the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan your identity document (you’ll also need to create or sign into your UK Visas and Immigration account)

If you’re applying from inside the UK, you could apply to extend your Child Student visa or switch from another type of visa.

What if the application is taking a long time?

Don’t worry, you’ll be told if the application is due to take longer than expected. It could be because:

  • supporting documents need to be verified
  • you need to attend an interview (if you’re 16 or 17)
  • of your personal circumstances (for instance, if you have a criminal conviction)
What happens next?

Depending on how you confirmed your identity, you’ll receive one of the below if your application is accepted.

  • A biometric residence permit (BRP). This is a small ID card that contains your personal details. You’ll get one if you had your fingerprints and photo taken at a visa application centre.
  • A digital immigration status. You’ll get this if you used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app.
