Study English in the UK Student Visa

A handy list of the documents you will need during your visa application.

Study English in the UK

What documents do I need to apply for a short-term study visa?

You’ll need to provide documents about yourself and your course. Depending on who you’re travelling with and whether you’re over 18, there might be some additional documents you’ll need. Remember to include a certified translation if any of your documents aren’t in English or Welsh already.

Documents about you
  • A valid passport that has a blank page for your visa, or another travel document.
  • Proof that you can support yourself during your trip (you could provide bank statements or payslips for the last 6 months for instance).
  • Details of where you intend to stay in the UK and any other travel plans. It’s a good idea to wait until your visa has been accepted before paying for accommodation or travel.
  • Proof that you’ve paid your course fees or have enough money to pay them.
  • Your tuberculosis (TB) test results, if you’re from a country where you have to take the TB test
  • Contact details for at least one parent or guardian in your home country, if you’re under 18 years old.
Documents about your course

You’ll need written proof of the course you’re studying. This could be a letter of acceptance, and it should state the course’s name, duration, and cost (including accommodation).

Depending on your circumstances, you might need additional documents to show evidence of your:

  • permission to be in the country you’re applying from (if you’re not a national)
  • financial sponsor’s job, income, savings, or funds that will support your studies
What additional documents do I need if I’m under 18?

If you’re under 18, you might need to provide some additional documents. This is true if you’re travelling on your own, or with someone who is not your parent or guardian.

What if I’m travelling on my own?

You’ll need written consent from your legal guardian or both of your parents (it can be one parent if they have sole responsibility). This needs to show they consent to:

  • your visa application
  • your living arrangements and care in the UK
  • your travel to the UK

Not only this, but they’ll also need to provide proof that you have somewhere suitable to live whilst you’re in the UK. It should include:

  • the address where you’ll be living
  • the name and date of birth of the person you’ll be staying with, and details of your relationship to that person
  • consent in writing so they can look after you during your stay in the UK

Your parent, guardian, or school will need to tell the relevant local authority if either:

  • you’re under 18 and have a disability
  • someone who is not a close relative will be looking after you for more than 28 days (this is also known as private foster care)

Don’t forget to provide a reply from the local authority if you have one.

What if I’m travelling with an adult (someone 18 or older)?

They can apply for a visa at the same time as you but will need to complete a separate application. You’ll need to identify the adult you’re travelling with when you apply for your visa.

Remember, they’ll need to be with you when you enter the UK. You can identify up to 2 adults in your visa application, and you’ll have to travel with at least one of them for your visa to be valid.
