How do I apply for a Standard Visitor visa?

Top tip: Once you’ve started your application, you can save your form and complete it later at a time that suits you.

You don't need to finish it all at once, so you can always go away and come back to it if you need to.

Step 1 - Starting your application

Visit the UK Visas and Immigration services website to start your application. It's a good idea to do this as early as you can (3 months before you travel).

If you’re applying with family members, each person will need to have their own application and pay the fee. You can apply on behalf of your partner and child if they can’t apply for themselves. They need to attend their own appointment at a visa application centre.

Step 2 - Booking an appointment

Book an appointment at a visa application centre. Some countries might not have their own visa application centre, but you can find your nearest visa centre here. Leave plenty of time to book your appointment in case you have to wait for one.

Step 3 - During the appointment

This is when you’ll need to confirm your identity with the relevant documents. It's essentially just to make sure you are really you!

Don’t forget, you’ll need to:

  • confirm your identity with your passport or travel document
  • have your fingerprints and photograph taken (known as ‘biometric information’)
  • provide the required documents that show you’re eligible for a Standard Visitor visa

Don’t worry if the visa application centre keeps your passport and documents while processing your application, this is completely normal.
