What requirements do I need to meet?

You’ll need a passport or travel document to enter the UK. Don’t forget to check that it’ll be valid for the whole of your trip, to avoid problems later on. You’ll need to show that:

  • you’ll leave the UK at the end of your visit
  • you’re able to support yourself and anybody else who depends on you (such as children or a spouse) during your trip. Or, you could show that you have funding from someone else.
  • you’re able to pay for your return and onward journey or have funding from someone else.
  • you’re not planning to live in the UK by taking multiple, reoccurring visits, or to make the UK your main home.

Due to the risk of tuberculosis (TB) in some countries, you might need to take a test before visiting the UK. You can find out here if you’ll need to take one.

The rules on what you’ll need to enter the UK may be different if you’re travelling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

Are there any additional eligibility requirements?

If you’re applying for a Standard Visitor visa as an academic, you’ll need to meet a few more eligibility requirements. You’ll have to be:

  • highly qualified in your field of expertise - this will usually mean you have a PhD or higher.
  • currently working in that field of expertise at an academic institution overseas.
  • not filling a permanent teaching post.
  • visiting to do research or a formal exchange (if you are not a senior doctor or dentist).
  • visiting to do research, clinical practice, a formal exchange or to teach (if you are a senior doctor or dentist).

Make sure you have the documentation to show you meet these requirements. To research certain subjects at postgraduate level or above, you may need to get an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate before you start your research.
