How do I apply for a Standard Visitor visa when travelling for medical reasons?

Top Tip: You’re able to save your form and complete it at a later time, meaning you can fill it out in stages, in your own time.

Step 1 - Beginning your application

You can start your application, here, from up to 3 months before you travels begin.

Step 2 - Book your appointment

The next step is to book your appointment and to do this, you’ll need to find your nearest application centre. Don’t worry if your country doesn’t have one, you can still visit your closest centre but it’s a good idea to do this as early as possible to leave enough time for travel.

Step 3 - At the appointment

During the appointment, you’ll need to show the relevant documents to confirm your identity. These will include:

  • your passport or travel document
  • have your photo and fingerprint taken (also known as biometric information)
  • show any other additional required documents that show you can apply for a Standard Visitor visa whilst travelling for medical reasons.

You may find that the visa application centre keeps hold of your passport and documents while processing your application, this is completely normal and you don’t need to worry.

If your family are planning to travel with you, each family member will need to have their own application and pay the fee.

If your family are unable to apply for themselves, you can do so on their behalf. But, please note, they’ll need to be at their own appointment at a visa application centre.
