What documents do I need to apply for this visa when travelling for medical reasons?

As previously mentioned, you’ll need a valid passport to apply for this visa, as well as have a blank page in it for your Standard Visitor visa.

You’ll need to provide a few more documents that show:

  • you’ll leave the UK when your treatment is finished
  • you or someone else can support yourself and your family (or any other dependants) throughout your stay
  • you can pay for your return or onward journey, or someone else can
  • you’ll not live in the UK for longer than planned or make the UK your primary home
What else will I need to include in my online application?
  • the dates you’re planning to travel to the UK
  • where you’ll be staying during your visit
  • how much you think your trip will cost
  • your current home address and how long you’ve lived there
  • your parents’ names and dates of birth (if
    known)
  • how much you earn in a year (if you have an income)
  • details of any criminal, civil or immigration offences you may have committed

Please note, you could be asked to provide some further details if your circumstances require you to, these could include:

  • details of your travel history for the past 10 years
  • your employer’s address and phone number

  • the name and address of anyone paying for your trip
  • the name, address, and passport number of any family members you have in the UK
  • a certificate proving that you’ve had a tuberculosis (TB) test if you’re visiting for longer than 6 months
Are there any additional documents I need to provide?

Since you’re travelling for medical reasons, there are some further documents that you’ll need to provide:

If you’re visiting for private medical treatment…

You’ll need to have a letter written by a doctor or consultant that confirms:

  • the condition you have that needs consultation or treatment
  • the estimated cost and length of treatment
  • where the consultation and treatment will take place

If you’re visiting for treatment at an NHS hospital

You’ll need to provide an authorisation form, issued by the government of your country, saying they will pay for your treatment.

If you’re visiting as an organ donor

You’ll need to show a letter from the lead nurse of the transplant team, who is a General Medical Council registered specialist or a registered NHS consultant. They’ll just need to confirm that:

  • you’re a donor match to the recipient, or you’re being tested to see if you’re a potential donor
  • the recipient is genetically related to you, or in a close personal relationship with you
  • when and where the transplant or tests will take place

Please note, the letter should be dated up to 3 months (no earlier) before you plan to arrive in the UK.

If the recipient of the donor is not legally resident in the UK:

  • you’ll need to provide their name, nationality, and date of birth in your application
  • check if the recipient of the donor will need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa
  • the recipient of the donor will need to check if they meet the medical visa requirements for medical treatment.

Please note, you’ll be asked to provide certified translations for the above is they’re not already in English or Welsh.
